Wages

  • Minimum rate is £5.52 an hour from 1st October 2007 for workers ages 22 or over.
  • Minimum rate for workers aged 18-21 inclusive is £4.60 an hour.
  • Minimum rate for workers aged 16 to 17 inclusive is £3.40 an hour.

A few key measures under the National Minimum Wage (NMW) legislation are;

Employees - or workers, as government now calls them - cannot agree with employers to accept wages under the NMW, even if they want to. Employers not paying the NMW to workers for any period, will be required to pay them arrears for all wages due to them. Workers believing they are not being paid the NMW have rights to see their pay records.

The statutory entitlement to paid holiday increases from 4 weeks to 4.8 weeks (24 days for someone working a five day week).
