Training
The vast majority of those in hairdressing training are studying towards National Vocation Awards, known more simply as NVQs. These qualifications can be taken as work based training, or by those who decide to study purely at a college of further education.
Most hairdressing trainees are taking NVQ level 2, the broad foundation to becoming qualified. Next, there is the opportunity to progress to NQV Level 3 - a good step for those wanting to take on responsibilities in management or training.
NVQ's are also 'first choice' qualifications for those seeking official recognition as State Registered Hairdressers.
There has always been a debate within hairdressing as to the best form of training; college based versus work or salon based. There are very good and extremely poor examples of both these main routes into hairdressing. The truth is, some trainees are better suited to college and others to a work based environment while training. In recent times, there has been a movement towards a greater involvement of salons in the whole area of training. The age of hairdressing trainees is rising as an increasing number of adults are finding it possible to secure good training opportunities. This is particularly true of the intensive courses for mature students being run by a number of further education colleges.
A testament to the quality of training available in this country is that probably more hairdressers from Britain are known, around the world, than those of any other country.
